Not getting a good night’s sleep can seriously affect your day to day life. But many of us have trouble drifting off when we hit the hay. We toss and turn; play things over in our mind – and then, eventually go to sleep.
So what can you do to get a better night’s sleep?
Let’s find out.
Create a sleep schedule
One of the most important things to do if you’re having trouble getting to sleep at night is create a sleep schedule. And stick to it. Pick a time to go to sleep and to wake up and stick to it. Even at weekends. Sure, it might be tough to get into the routine to start with, but eventually you’ll find yourself drifting off at the same time every night.
And if you can’t get to sleep at your set time every night, don’t use it as an excuse to wake up later. Still set your alarm for your scheduled wake up time.
Watch what you eat and drink
Going to bed hungry or too full is going to affect sleep. Drinking too much before bed is going to cause those dreaded late night toilet trips too. So be mindful of how much you’re eating and drinking before you hit the hay.
Caffeine, alcohol, and nicotine all damage sleep as well. You might think that your bedtime whiskey makes you drowsy, but it’ll disrupt your sleep later in the night.
Bedtime rituals
More and more people are getting into bed with their smartphone or tablet in hand without realising the detrimental effects that these will have on sleep. A bed time ritual is good for sleep. Just as long as it doesn’t involved brightly lit screens!
You need something that’ll ease you into drowsiness. One of the best and most popular ways to do this is climb into bed with a book an hour or so before your planned sleep time.
Limit nap time
It’s obvious that day time naps will affect sleep, but if you must take a nap in the day limit it to around 10-30 minutes mid-afternoon.
Exercise
If you want to improve your quality of sleep then exercise is a must. Regular physical activity will help you fall asleep much quicker. Why? Because you’ll be tired out from all that exercise! Plus, it helps reduce stress and makes you much healthier!
Get comfy
You aren’t going to sleep if you’re uncomfortable in your bed. So if you’re having trouble sleeping, take a close look at your mattress and duvet. It may be worth investing a little more money than you usually would in a mattress to guarantee a good night’s kip.
